(4) Cases of violation of media freedoms, March 2026

The Media Freedoms Observatory in Yemen (MARSADAK) released its monthly report “Infographic” on the status of media freedoms and the arbitrary practices against journalists and media outlets, documented (4) cases of of violations during the month of March 2026.

The violations recorded by the Observatory have varied case Assault, and incitement, and Threats, and Trial and Interrogation

The Observatory recorded violations in the governorates of Aden, Hadhramaut.

Escalating Pressure on Journalists and Freedom of Expression

During March, patterns of restrictions on journalists continued, taking the form of harassment, threats, and security summonses linked to their journalistic work and opinions. In Hadramout Governorate, journalist Mohammed Balhamaan was summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department in Mukalla following a complaint filed by the Oil company in the city, after he announced his intention to prepare an investigative report on corruption in the oil sector.

In Aden, cases of threats and incitement were also documented targeting journalists because of their writings and critical views toward the dissolved Southern Transitional Council (STC). These incidents point to a concerning environment marked by increasing pressure on press freedom and freedom of expression, following a period in which the governorate had witnessed a relative improvement in the level of freedoms.
