(6) Cases of violation of media freedoms, October 2024

The Media Freedoms Observatory in Yemen released its monthly report “Infographic” on the status of media freedoms and the arbitrary practices against journalists and media outlets, documented (6) cases of of violations against media freedoms during October 2024.

the violations recorded by the Observatory have varied Two Arrests, and One Detention, and Two Trial, and Interrogation, and One Threats.

the Observatory recorded violations in the governorates of (Aden, Hadhramaut, Taiz, Marib).

The report pointed out the parties committed such violations, are the Yemeni government 5 cases, the Unknown persons One case.

Arrest of Journalist Mohammed Al-Yazidi Without Trial

Security agencies in Aden detained journalist Mohammed Al-Yazidi following a complaint filed by PLC member Major General Faraj Al-Bahsani. The journalist was held for 15 days before being released without trial, following the intervention of the Southern Journalists’ Syndicate, affiliated with the STC which helped his release from the Criminal Investigation Department’s prison under Aden Security Management.

Al-Yazidi had come Aden from Hadhramaut to continue his work, fearing for his life after facing threats and persecution from security and judicial authorities in Hadhramaut during Al-Bahsani’s tenure as governor, a period marked by hostility toward journalists.

Reports show that under Al-Bahsani’s tenure, 51 of the total 79 violations against journalists between 2015 and the end of 2023 were recorded, reflecting an abuse of power during that time.

Currently, eight journalists remain detained: Wahid Al-Sofi, Mohammed Al-Moqri, Naseh Shaker, Nabil Al-Saudi, Ahmed Maher, Fahd Al-Arhabi, Mohammed Al-Muyahi, Mohammed Al-Hotami. Some of these journalists have been imprisoned for over nine years, with three among them forcibly disappeared, raising serious concerns about their safety and detention conditions.
