Statement of Condemnation Regarding Journalist Ben Ghalib Detention

The Media Freedoms Observatory in Yemen strongly condemns the assault and detention of journalist Salah Ben Ghalib, correspondent for Al-Mushahid Net, during his coverage of students protest in Lahj Governorate.
In a report received by the Observatory, journalist Ben Ghalib said that he was assaulted, and soldiers dressed in civilian and military clothes attempted to confiscate his camera before he was taken to the detention center of Tur Al Bahah District. This incident occurred due to his coverage of a peaceful protest by students of Khadija Girls’ High School protesting the results of the high school exams.
This incident highlights the increasing violations against press freedom and the right to expression in Yemen, where journalists are deprived of the ability to work safely and fulfill their professional duties.
We hold the security authorities in Lahj Governorate responsible for this assault, which violates international human rights standards and does not contribute to fostering an environment of freedom and democracy.
Therefore, we call on the relevant authorities to:
– Launch an urgent and transparent investigation into the assault on journalist Ben Ghalib.
– Immediate apprehend the perpetrators and hold them accountable under appropriate legal measures.
– Respect freedom of the press and the right of journalists to cover events freely and safely.
– Provide a safe environment that ensures freedom of expression in the country.
– Take immediate measures to prevent the recurrence of such violations.
