Session: “Specialized Journalism: Exploring Missed Opportunities”

The second session of the first day of the Third Yemeni Media Conference was held titled “Specialized Journalism: Exploring Missed Opportunities.” It featured fruitful discussions with experts and specialized journalists in fields such as economic journalism, science journalism, and data journalism.

The session was moderated by researcher and journalist Abdullah Bakhrisa, with the participation of over 300 journalists, activists, and academics. Data journalist Bassam Ghaber opened the discussion by highlighting the concept of data journalism and the methods for analyzing information and transforming complex data into easily understandable stories that can have a tangible impact, particularly in light of digital and technological advancements. Ghaber emphasized the importance of data journalists possessing skills that enable them to effectively read and interpret scientific studies and research.

Meanwhile, journalist Omar Alhaiani shared his experience in science journalism, shedding light on essential requirements, methods for verifying sources, and narrative techniques that enhance clarity. He emphasized that this type of journalism targets a broad audience, not just specialists, with the aim of fostering a particular culture.

Economic expert and Chairman of the SEMC, Mustafa Nasr, highlighted the importance of journalists being well-versed in necessary tools and techniques, diverse in their fields, and striving to enhance their creativity and skills.

Nasr also introduced a range of key economic terms that every journalist specializing in this field should know, given the challenges economic journalism faces in the region due to a lack of analytical perspectives.

The session concluded by presenting concepts and methods to enhance journalists’ specialization in fields like climate, environment, economy, and data journalism. The full session can be watched through the link here.
