Marsadak Condemns the Referral of Journalist Al-Miyahi to the Specialized

The Media Freedoms Observatory in Yemen expresses deep concern over the continued targeting of journalists in Yemen. On Monday, January 13, 2025, journalist Mohammed Al-Miyahi was referred to the Specialized Criminal Prosecution in Sana’a, which is under the control of the Houthi group (Ansar Allah). This step constitutes a blatant violation of press freedom and a serious threat to the safety of journalists working in an extremely dangerous environment.

Al-Miyahi has endured a series of violations, beginning with his arrest four months ago during a wave of detentions that targeted several journalists and activists who expressed their views on the anniversary of the September 26 Revolution, a symbol of liberation from the Imamate regime.

He was then subjected to a month-long enforced disappearance, during which security authorities denied any connection to his whereabouts. After enduring great hardship, he was finally allowed to contact his family for the first time on November 3, followed by a first visit from his wife on November 6, according to statements by his lawyer, Ammar Ali Yaseen. Despite these developments, the referral of his case to the prosecution constitutes a renewed violation of his rights and freedom.

We call for the immediate release of journalist Mohammed Al-Miyahi and for respect for freedom of expression, which is a fundamental right guaranteed by international law.

We also urge the international community to exert pressure to end the ongoing violations against journalism in Yemen.
